Vector Calculus-Review– Coulomb’s Law, Electric Field Intensity and Flux density: Experimental law of Coulomb, Electric field intensity, Field due to continuous volume charge distribution, Field of a line charge, Field due to Sheet of charge, Electric flux density, Numerical Problems.

Gauss Law and Applications, Electric Potential, Relations Between E and V, Energy Density. Displacement and Conduction Currents, Dielectric Constant, Isotropic and Homogeneous Dielectrics, Boundary conditions, Continuity Equation, Relaxation Time, Poisson’s and Laplace’s Equations, Capacitance – Parallel Plate, Coaxial, Spherical Capacitors.

MAGNETOSTATICS

Biot-Savart’s Law, Ampere’s Circuital Law and Applications, Magnetic Flux Density, Boundary conditions, Magnetic Scalar and Vector Potentials, Forces due to Magnetic Fields, Ampere’s Force Law.

MAXWELL’S EQUATIONS (TIME VARYING FIELDS)

Faraday’s Law and Transformer EMF, Inconsistency of Ampere’s Law and Displacement Current Density, Maxwell’s Two Equations for Magnetostatic Fields, Maxwell’s Two Equations for Electrostatic Fields Maxwell’s Equations in Different Forms, Conditions at a Boundary Surface - Dielectric-Dielectric and Dielectric-Conductor Interfaces.

PLANE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

Wave Equations for Conducting and Perfect Dielectric Media, Uniform Plane Waves – Definitions, Relation between E & H, Wave Propagation in Lossless and Conducting Media, Wave Propagation in Good Conductors and Good Dielectrics, Reflection and refraction of waves at planar boundaries, Normal and Oblique Incidences for both Perfect Conductor and Perfect Dielectrics, Brewster Angle, Critical Angle and Snell’s law and total internal reflection, Group velocity, Skin effect , Surface Impedance, Electromagnetic power flow and Poynting vector, Poynting’s theorem
