Factor influencing machine design, selection of materials based on mechanical properties – Direct, bending and torsion stress equations – Impact and shock loading – Calculation of principle stresses for various load combinations, eccentric bending – Factor of safety – Theories of failure – Stress concentration – Fatigue strength and the S-N diagram – Soderberg, Goodman and Gerber relations.

Design of helical and leaf springs under constant and varying loads – Design of knuckle and cotter joints.

Selection of bearings – Sliding contact and rolling contact types – Cubic mean load – Design of journal bearing – McKee’s equation – Lubrication in journal bearings – Calculation of bearing dimensions – Design of ball bearings.
